Marriage broker 'Umm Reem' is a man

A presumed online female marriage broker called ‘Umm Reem’ turned out to be a man who extorted nearly Dh70,000 from many victims in Sharjah.

Police arrested the man, in his 20s, after several couple reported that he had embezzled large sums of money from them through social networks with the help of his mother, according to Emarat Al Youm daily.

The man was asking victims, mainly girls, to remit money to him as fees to search for a presumed groom, the paper said.

It said his mother was receiving the money remitted by the victims to an exchange house in the emirate.

“During interrogation, he confessed that he embezzled money from a large number of men and girls from different nationalities, mainly Gulf countries,” the paper said.
