Mohammed sets up Literature Foundation

In his capacity as Ruler of Dubai, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, has issued decree No 8 of 2013 establishing ‘Emirates Literature Foundation’ with a share capital of Dh18.7 million.

As per the decree, the Emirates Literature Foundation shall enjoy an independent legal authority with legal capacity to promote literature and create a suitable environment for writers.
According to the decree, Emirates Airlines, Dubai Culture and Arts Authority and LitFest shall comprise the co-founders.

The decree also stipulates the formation of the Board of Trustees of "Emirates Literature Foundation”, with Chairman of Dubai Civil Aviation and Chief Executive of Emirates Group Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum as Chairman and the membership of Sheikha Latifa bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Isobel Abulhoul, Dr. Lowai Mohammed Belhoul; Maurice Flangan; Dr Rafia Obaid Ghubash; and Dr Hessa Abdullah Lootah.

As stated by the decree, organising, managing and supervising Emirates Airlines Literature Festival and supervising the annual Emirates Airlines Festival of Literature,  promoting literary output in Arabic, English and other languages, particularly literary works targeting children, aattracting international and renowned authors to the Emirates Airlines Festival of Literature to present their literary works to the public, inviting selected writers from among UAE nationals and residents to attend other international festivals of literature and ensuring that the Emirates Airlines Literature Festival is comprehensive and accessible for all are among the main objectives of the foundation.

The foundation shall coordinate with the Dubai Culture and Arts Authority and other concerned bodies to establish “Writers Centre” as a nucleus to hold all- year literary activities and encourage authors.

The decree is effective from the date of its issuance and shall be published in the Official Gazette.
