More than 20 injured in Sharjah bus accident

More than 20 Umrah pilgrims were injured, some of them seriously, when the bus they were travelling in toppled to its side in Sharjah on Wednesday.

The bus belonging to Al Ghazal Transport was heading to Al Ain when the accident happened near Sharjah City Centre while negotiating the exit from Al Wahda Street .

At least five passengers were reported to be in a serious condition and have been rushed to hospitals in Sharjah, sources said.

While the cause of the accident could not be determined immediately, it is said the driver seems to have lost control when he was forced to take a sharp turn when another vehicle tried to get into the lane exiting Al Wahda Street.  However, further details are awaited.

Paramedics and police arrived at the scene to handle the situation and shift the injured to hospitals after providing first aid.

The front portion of the bus was partly smashed and windscreen shattered. 

The accident led to a massive traffic jam in the area until the scene was cleared by police personnel and rescue teams.
