A key shopping mall in Sharjah came up with a novel charity idea for Eid Al Fitr by placing various food items in a massive fridge at one of its halls and asking those who cannot afford buying to have some of them free.

The filled fridge carried the words “those who cannot afford paying can have some of them free,” according to the semi-official daily Alittihad.

It quoted a mall manager as saying the gesture coincided with Eid Al Fitr and is intended to ensure poor people have enough food on this occasion.

“It is also intended to give alms to the poor so they will avoid humiliation by begging in the street…here they can pick what they want for their needs.”

The report said the fridge was filled through Eid days by various food items at least three times daily because of strong demand, adding that the items included canned food, dairy products, bread, juice and other foodstuffs.

“We are the first mall to launch this humanitarian initiative…it aims to bring delight to the poor and illustrates the charitable nature of the UAE society,” a mall official said.
