Old man held for meeting girl in Saudi park

Saudi Arabia’s feared Islamic police arrested an ageing Arab expatriate while meeting a girl in a public park in the Gulf Kingdom, a newspaper reported on Thursday.

Members of the Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice raided the park in the northern province of Tabuk and found the 68-year-old man with the unidentified woman.

“He told them that he knew the woman when he gave her a lift the other day… but they arrested him as the considered their being together as a prohibited meeting since she is not related to him.”

Unless related to each other, mixed-gender meetings are banned in public places in Saudi Arabia, one of the most conservative nations.
