Seawater floods parts of Kalba corniche

By Staff

Strong and high tides in the eastern coast of Kalba, near Fujairah caused floods in the town Tuesday.

Public beaches and areas closer to the coast were inundated with seawater and emergency teams from civil defence were deployed to suck the water back to the sea.

“Sea water suddenly rose on Tuesday, pushing water inland after crossing the concrete barrier along the Corniche,” said Hammoud Abdullah, Acting Director of Kalba Municipality.

Traffic on the corniche and other adjacent roads had to be diverted as the tide remained high throughout the day and several pumps had to be used to suck the water out.

Abdullah said that the flooding is normal during summer months and are caused by storms in the sea.

He advised the residents and fishermen to stay away from the sea, while adding that the municipality along with the police and civil defence is chalking out a contingency plan to tackle the situation.
