The country's first dedicated plant to handle medical and hazardous waste will be launched in Sharjah by end of the year, Jeremy Byatt, Director of Environmental Responsibility of Bee’ah, Sharjah Environmental Company told Emirates 24-7.

He said such a project is important considering the health hazards medical waste such as polluted needles and tissues could pose to public health.

The plant, being designed with international safety standards, aims at ensuring safe disposal of medical waste that will be collected from hospitals and clinics, he said.

The project comes under Bee’ah, which was in 2007 awarded the management of the emirate's landfill.

The landfill is now the world's third largest plant for waste separation, recycling and disposal, he said.

On Sharjah's waste collection enterprise, Tandeef Company, Byatt said it segregates recyclable waste materials like paper, metals, and bottles.

Such items are them packed and sold to local recycling firms.

Organic waste materials are collected and recycled into fertilisers, for which a dedicated plant is being developed.
