There were 96 run-over accidents in Sharjah during the first quarter of this year, which led to 17 deaths and 85 injuries, ranging from simple to medium and severe, according to Khalifa Bu Ghanem, Member of Sharjah Excutive Council.

Khalifa Bu Ghanem attributed the high rate to high speeds and lack of pedestrian crossings,  especially in the street that extends from the Al Mina’a Road to the roundabout of Zulal factory  to Al Khan.

“The speed limit in this street is 60kmph as there are 9 hotels on this road. Despite that, some motorists drive recklessly," he said.

He called for the installation of a mobile radar and specialised pedestrians crossings in order to prevent the occurrence of accidents.

Major General Hamid Al Hadidi Director-General of Sharjah Police, said the objectives of the Sharjah Police Traffic strategy developed by the Ministry of Interior, aimed at a minimum mortality rate from road accidents.

He, however, acknowledged the presence of shortage in the number of pedestrian crossings in the emirate.

‘The Ruler of Sharjah has ordered to set up a number of pedestrian crossings at various places in the emirate in order to preserve the lives of citizens and residents,” said Al Hadidi.

He pointed out that the police has organised several traffic awareness campaigns, in various languages.

He said “there are plans to fix radars in all the emirate's roads, and increase the number of traffic signals to reduce road accidents.
