Chancellor of American University of Sharjah (AUS) Dr. Peter Heath has declared AUS campus as a non-smoking zone with effect from Sunday, according to the instructions of HH Dr Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah in this respect.

The initiative aims to put AUS in the forefront of the environmental drive to protect public health and environment from the smoking, and associated pollution.

Earlier, Sheikh Sultan announced the AUS as a non-smoking zone during the graduation ceremony on Jan. 27, 2010. The Ruler of Sharjah also announced that the AUS has commenced an ambitious plan to guide the consumption of electricity and water in the campus, including the residences of the staff and the student hostels.

Dr Heath said the smoking is not allowed in the campus and nearby courtyards with effect from Sunday. He added that the smoking ban was imposed to protect the health of passive smokers and the environment as well.
