Teen acquitted of abetting girl’s suicide

An appeals court in Abu Dhabi acquitted a teen age Arab boy accused of encouraging his girl friend of committing a suicide by jumping down from her apartment in a high rise building in the capital, the press reported on Monday.

A court had earlier sentenced the boy to three months in prison and ordered his deportation from the UAE after he was convicted of encouraging the girl to end her life by showing no concern when she texted him about her intentions.

After receiving her last message, the boy rushed to her building and tried to talk to her. But to his shock, she jumped down and died instantly.

The boy then phoned the police about the incident, rushed back to his house and tried to end his life but was stopped by relatives.

He told court that he had promised the girl to marry her but later found out she was under marriage age. He said he was misled about her age as she looked over-aged given the big size of her body.

“The court of appeals found the boy innocent and acquitted him of all charges despite the exchange of messages with the victim, who was of the same nationality,” Dubai-based Arabic language daily Emirat Alyoum said.
