Did you know that women absorb approximately 2.5 kgs of toxic chemicals a year from using various beauty products?
It even takes 26 seconds only for chemicals to be absorbed into the bloodstream!
There are so many studies that have linked cancer to the use of toxic chemicals.
The Breast Cancer Prevention Partners organisation has found strong evidence to show that exposure to several toxic ingredients including paraben, phthalates and oxybenxone (found in many sunscreens) is linked to breast cancer.
Other toxic chemicals include formaldehyde, toluene, triclosan, propylene glycol, sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), sodium laureth sulfate (SLES) and more.
Leena Al Abbas, Founder of The Organic Glow Beauty Lounge- the UAE’s first organic & vegan salon in Dubai shares her experience and her story.
“I used to get severe chemical reactions every time I used to do my hair colour and nails in salons. So I started the Organic Glow Beauty Lounge back in 2010, when I realized that there weren’t any salons in the UAE that offered natural and toxic-free treatments, and I wanted to offer women a healthier option for beauty treatments.”
“Our skin is the largest organ in our body, so what you put on your body is just as important as what you ingest in your body. Nowadays there is an increase in awareness about the dangers of using products that contain toxic/harsh chemicals.”
“My salon’s mission is to educate women and increase awareness about the dangers of using harsh chemicals on themselves. We do so by the treatments that we offer which are as effective as regular salon treatments, minus the harsh chemicals. Our new clients are always pleasantly surprised when they enter our salon and don’t smell any chemicals, although we do nail treatments and hair colour. All our treatments offer a safer alternative to the conventional salon services, and educating our customers on the availability of alternative options is what differentiates us from other salons” said Leena Al Abbas.
The vegan salon owner states: “It’s impossible to avoid every single synthetic chemical, but you can do your part in limiting the amount of toxins your body is exposed to. Be sure to: eat clean, avoid chemical-laden processed foods, drink plenty of filtered water (plastic bottled water contains chemicals that leech from the plastic, so it is best to switch to filtered water consumed from glass bottles), and look for products that are certified organic if you want to avoid toxic chemicals.”
She adds: “It is best to educate yourself and do your research before you buy anything. Spend time reading ingredients. You have one life to live and one body. If you don’t take care of yourself, you may pay for it later in sickness.”
