Social media is redefined the way companies identify and hire talent. Global studies have indicated that the use of social media for hiring purposes is at an all-time high, with 92 per cent of companies using platforms such as Twitter, LinkedIn and Facebook for recruitment.

In addition, 45 per cent of Fortune 500 firms include links to social media on their career page sections. Among the current crop of social media platforms, LinkedIn is the most savvy for recruitment as it is seen as the most ‘corporate’ among social media platforms, and does not come with a 140-character limit.

On LinkedIn Mena, a number of reputed regional companies like Emirates, Saudi Aramco, Sonatrach, SABIC, Pakistan Telecommunication Company, Facebook, Google, Standard Chartered, Yahoo, Etihad, Apple, Arabtech, Jumeirah Group, National Bank of Abu Dhabi, Shell and Etisalat looking for the right candidates.

And, it isn’t just big names on the platform. Small and medium-sized companies too are looking for the right candidates. Besides big companies, top universities in the Mena region are also on LinkedIn. University of Karachi (Pakistan), Cairo University (Egypt), Islamic Azad University (Iran), King Fahd University of Petroleum & Minerals (KSA), American University of Sharjah (UAE), American University of Beirut (Lebanon) have a presence on the site.

Globally, LinkedIn leads the way on the jobs front, favoured by 93 per cent of companies, ahead of Facebook (66 per cent) and Twitter (54 per cent). In terms of careers and jobs, LinkedIn has indeed stolen a march over peer platforms even as Twitter remains the most ‘viral’ platform and Facebook the most ‘social’ among the three.

In this scenario, having an up-to-date LinkedIn profile is common sense, whether or not you are an active jobseeker, as there remain opportunities that you can take advantage of.

The website has seen a huge surge in popularity and in a short span of time, it now boasts of a huge member base.

“LinkedIn is today proud to inform you that that it is now 10 million members strong in the Mena region. LinkedIn first set foot in the region in 2012, and since then has grown from 5 million members to 10 million in just a span of a year,” the platform maintains in a media statement.

“Beyond numbers, this is a hugely important milestone for LinkedIn and shows that LinkedIn has truly enabled these millions of members to build a solid professional identity and provided them with invaluable opportunities to connect with industry peers, potential customers and grow their professional network,” it adds.

“Today, LinkedIn connects professionals across the region including UAE, KSA, Qatar, Egypt, Lebanon, and more. Members include top-level CXOs, entrepreneurs, academicians, engineers, doctors and marketers.”
