UAE combats human trafficking

The National Committee to Combat Human Trafficking (NCCHT) has launched a media campaign to create general awareness about human trafficking and simple ways to combat it.

In order to reach a cross section of people in the UAE, the campaign is in multiple languages and will be carried across print, electronic and social media channels.

“This national campaign is a reflection of the government's commitment to stand firmly against abuse of human beings through exploitation,” said Dr. Anwar Gargash, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Minister of State for Federal National Council Affairs, and Chairman of NCCHT.

“In the UAE's nearly-decade-long experience in fighting this crime, we have realised that more people are aware about what constitutes human trafficking and how it could be avoided, the more effective our counter-trafficking strategy will be,” he added.

The campaign, which began in December 2015 and will run until June 2016, will also convey NCCHT's strategy in fighting this crime, communicating details of and amendments to Federal Law 51 (2006), which became effective in early 2015, and advertising helpline numbers for the benefit of informers and victims.

Number of mediums have been chosen to convey various messages to different sections of the people, such as newspaper advertisements in English and Arabic are aimed at the general public, as would be hoardings at airports. Radio spots in English, Arabic, Hindi and Tagalog are aimed at prospective victims and traffickers, apart from the public in general; pocket-size booklets will be distributed at airports in eight languages – English, Arabic, Hindi, Urdu, Tagalog, Bengali, Russian and Basha Indonesia; and several short videos on social media would serve as source of information to the international audience about the UAE's achievements and challenges.

“The NCCHT has also revamped its website (www.nccht.gov.ae) to serve as a one-stop source of information on its anti-trafficking strategy since 2006, when Federal Law 51 was operationalised,” said Dr. Saeed of NCCHT.

“The UAE's intent is to make the fight against human trafficking a joint effort between the government and the public,” he added.
