The UAE Ministry of Energy will raise tariffs on electricity and water if consumers continue to waste energy and water, Mohammad Suhail Al Mazroui, Minister of Energy, Chairman of the Federal Electricity and Water Authority (Fewa), has said.

According to a report in the Arabic daily newspaper ‘Emarat Al Youm’, the minister said this during visits to the Ghalila water desalination plant in Ras Al Khaimah and the Umm Al Thoub power distribution station in Umm Al Quwain.

He said Fewa is incurring losses because of the cost of fuel used to generate electricity.

Fewa had allocated Dh1.47 billion for energy and water projects in the UAE, he added.

Electricity consumption in the UAE ranged between 25 to 30KW per hour compared to a global average of 7 to 15 KW, indicating waste of energy, Al Mazroui said.

Consumption of water in the UAE is the highest in the world at 500 to 550 litres per head per day compared to a world average of just 170 to 200 litres, he added.

With both electricity and water consumption in the UAE at more than three times the world average, it is important that citizens and residents must reduce wastage of both, the minister said.
