The UAE Ministry of Health has ordered withdrawal of product Ebixa (memantine hydrochloride) 5mg, which is manufactured by Lundbeck.

According to a report in ‘Gulf Today’, the order follows withdrawal by the manufacturer because of a problem in the product pump, which leads to a lower dose would be delivered to patients.

Abu Dhabi Health Authority has asked all healthcare practitioners to stop selling any medicine bottles and return them to the agent, and also to inform the Authority of any incidence of side effects resulting from the use of the said product.

Twenty-two batches are affected, including 12 batches of medicine packs with a capacity of 50ml and 10 batches of medicine packs with a capacity of 100ml.

A pharmacist was quoted as saying that Ebixa syrup is used in treatment of Alzheimer’s.
