Road fatalities in the UAE dropped by 21.01 per cent during the first half of 2010 with 391 deaths registered, compared to 495 deaths in the corresponding period of 2009.

According to a statistical report released by the Interior ministry’s Traffic Co-ordination Department (TCD), traffic accidents also fell by 25.5 per cent from 5,034 to 3,773 during the same period.

TCD Director Brigadier Ghaith Hassan Al Zaabi said traffic accidents, including those resulting in death, were "a natural outcome of the increasing traffic in the country's roads”.

He added that car crashes reached 2,544 during the first half of 2010, while run-off collisions accounted for 443 accidents.

Around 733 runover accidents were registered during that time.
