The Licensing Agency of the Roads and Transport Authority of Dubai has launched a licensing service for classic cars older than 30 years in collaboration with UAE Automobile and Touring Club.

The Licensing Agency will hold the first auction of unique numbers for classic cars on 14 June.

This came at a press conference held by Mohammed bin Sulayem, chairman of the UAE Automobile and Touring Club in Dubai in the presence of Ahmed Bahrozyan, CEO of the RTA’s Licensing Agency.

Bahrozyan said the classic cars must not be below 30 years gold, all the parts must be original and the vehicles must pass a technical inspection.

He said the classic cars will be classified into six categories. Class A cars will be free to run on all roads upto a distance of 10,000km a year. Class B vehicles will be allowed on all roads but can travel only 5,000km a year. Class C will be allowed on highways only. Class F will be only for display. The division of classic cars into various categories was based on global evaluation standards, he said.

He explained that if a car was manufactured before 1950, it will be awarded Category B, and if it was manufactured between 1950 and 1980, it will be classified in Category A. If the tyres are made of wood will be included in Category C or E or F after a full assessment of the car. Slow vehicles will be classified in Category F or C.

Mohammed bin Sulayem said there are 3,000 classic cars in UAE. "Despite the global financial crisis that hit the world three years ago, the classic car trade in the UAE rose by 20 per cent,” he said.

Owners of classic cars must contact the UAE Automobile and Touring Club for getting their vehicles examined, he added.
