The Abu Dhabi Food Control Authority (ADFCA) has called for safe disposal of veterinary waste in the emirate.

In a circular issued to all veterinary facilities, ADFCA urged companies specialising in waste disposal to handle veterinary medical waste with utmost care lest it become a threat to public health, according to a report in 'Al Ittihad' newspaper.

Mohamed Jalal Al Reyaysa, Director of Public Relations and Communications, ADFCA, said “each veterinary facility must have a contract with a waste-disposal company to handle its medical waste such as syringes, used medicines and hazardous materials. Only such a step will help avoid infection and spread of epidemics in humans and animals alike".

ADFCA strives to monitor all veterinary facilities, especially abattoirs, he said. During a campaign inspection, the authority found several irregularities in most abattoirs and other veterinary facilities.

The inspection campaign also checked computer programs used in tracking and maintaining records at abattoirs, veterinary clinics, laboratories, pharmacies, etc. It called for an integrated database, which would help ADFCA act upon complaints with regard to animal health, diseases, etc.
