Visitor held with fake dollars worth Dhs2.9m

Customs officials held an European visitor with who arrived at Dubai Airport with $804,000 (Dh2.9 million) worth of fake $100 currency notes on Januray 26.

Ali Al Mugahwi, Director, Passengers Operations Department, was quoted by 'Gulf Today', as saying that customs inspectors suspected a European tourist who arrived at Terminal 3 on a tourist visa. "He appeared nervous and, therefore, they closely monitored him. At the inspection area, when he was asked to handover his bags for inspection, he did not part with one bag. Officials found 8,040 of fake $100 notes as well as 2,300 notes ready to be counterfeited," he said.

The accused told investigators that he was asked by unidentified people in a European country to take the bag to Dubai and reside in a hotel from where someone would collect it from him.

The suspect is handed over to Dubai Airport Police for further investigations.
