Winner of million-dirham raffle almost junked ticket on hubby’s advice

An Indian housewife who won a million dirhams during a Dubai Shopping Festival promotion says she would never have won the prize if she had listened to her husband.

Jaya L K, a Dubai resident and a housewife, purchased a camera from an Emax store during the recently concluded Dubai Shopping Festival.

A coupon she received as part of the deal entered her in the Emax millionaire raffle.

She won the Dh1million prize money.

Speaking to Emirates 24|7, the elated Jaya said, “If I had listened to my husband the coupons would have been lying in the recycle bin now. Initially my husband was never interested in participating. He advised me to throw it away. In fact I almost did throw it. But then I decided to fill it in. I had completely forgotten about it until I received a call from Emax,” said Jaya.

“When I first received the call that told me I had won Dh1million, I thought it was part of the scam calls that we often receive from some weird mobile phone number.

“But the reality dawned upon me when he told me the exact token number,” she said.

Jaya plans to spend a part of the money on funding and facilitating children’s education among her community and her village in Rajasthan.

“I am planning to utilise a part of the prize money for children’s education. There are many poor children who cannot go to school because they do not have enough money.

“Therefore, we thought we will sponsor some of their education,” she added.
