Woman wins against lawyer in court

A woman beat an Emirati lawyer in his own ring when she convinced the UAE’s federal supreme court of annulling an earlier court sentence ordering her to pay him damages for alleged defamation, a local daily reported on Sunday.

The lawyer had filed a suit in Sharjah asking for damages of more than Dh500,000 after the woman screamed and swore at him during a book fair in the emirate, Alkhaleej Arabic language daily said.

But the Sharjah court ordered the woman to pay the unnamed lawyer Dh70,000 plus five per cent in annual interests after she was found guilty of insulting him in a public place, the paper said.

The lawyer rejected that verdict and decided to appeal with the federal supreme court for a bigger compensation.

“He told the court that she insulted him and his local dress, which shows a pent-up hatred of his country and people,” Alkhaleej said.

“The woman argued that she did swear at him but that he provoked her. She said

she did not act without any reason or provocation, arguing that the lawyer should also be held partly responsible….she also told court that the lawyer threatened her when he called her a liar and that he would punish her…the court was convinced with her argument and abolished the earlier sentence.”
