A fake maazoun who was performing the marriage of a couple in Saudi Arabia had clearly not thought the bridegroom could also be a fake. Once he completed the marriage rites and stretched his hand to congratulate the bridegroom, he was arrested.
The bridegroom later turned out to be a member of the feared Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice, who had been watching the presumed African maazoun (authorised marriage performer), Okaz daily reported on Thursday.
The Commission decided to act after it received complaints that the African expatriate is not an authorized maazoun although he had consummated many marriages.
“A Commission member disguised as a bridegroom and called that maazoun to perform his marriage,” it said. “Once it is done, the bridegroom jumped on him with the help of other Commission members, who were among the guests.”
