Ankabut – UAE’s private educational internet line

Ankabut (Spider), is the UAE advanced network for research and education.

The project, jointly managed by the Khalifa University and ICT Fund, will create a dedicated education network of universities and schools around the world.

The Ministry of Higher Education, the Telecom Regulatory Authority and other leading government bodies are actively supporting the Ankabut project.

Speaking to Emirates 24|7, Dr Steven Winstanley, Chief Executive Officer, Ankabut said about Dh66 million will be spent to develop the Ankabut network, which is different from the normal internet network.

It is a sort of dedicated network and faculty members and students get increased computing power as normal search engines or other traffic is not routed through this network.

“It currently links all major universities in the UAE. We can get connected from Fujairah to the New York University Campus or Oxford University. Our network comes under Internet 2 and does not run any other traffic,” he added.

“Over the next five years, we have to make it a financially viable network, without incurring any losses or profit,” he said.

Telecom Regulatory Authority (TRA) is funding the project through the ICT Fund. Dean E Hoke, Manager, Member Relations and Communications, Ankabut said the network can also be used for medical purposes as MRI images and other medical records can be easily transferred through the dedicated line.

A violin student in the UAE can get classes from a violin expert in the US or Europe.

“Ankabut is a lot more than an educational network,” he said.

Currently, universities like Higher Colleges of Technology, Khalifa University, RIT Dubai, American University of Sharjah, UAE University (Al Ain), Zayed University, New York University Abu Dhabi, Abu Dhabi University, IAT Aviation Academy are among 54 educational institutions linked to the network.
