Hundreds of wild dogs hound Fujairah

Residents of Fujairah have complained that the hundreds of stray dogs in the city constitute a real threat to the health and safety of the public.

They come in hordes and crowd the main streets, especially the roundabouts and alleys in Fujairah. They position themselves in front of residential buildings, and their population seems to be multiplying day after day.

The swarm of dogs have angered and horrified the residents of Fujairah, acknowledges Abdullah Al Mualla, Director of the Public Health and Environment Department of Fujairah Municipality.

According to complaints filed by residents, the stray dogs constitute a real threat to the safety and health of the families and their children, in addition to the rising nuisance factor because of the unrelenting barking all night long.

In response to the complaints, Fujairah Municipality has been sending out specialized team every week to certain neighbourhoods where the problem is needs attention. “The team gathers 8 to 10 stray dogs in different parts in Fujairah. Then they are placed in cages especially designed for this purpose and migrated in a healthy manner to a safe harbour,” explains Abdullah.

In the month of October alone, the team picked up 200 stray dogs from the Fujairah streets.

In the absence of a dog shelter in the emirate, the dogs are transferred to a dog shelter in Sharjah while Abdullah confirms efforts are made to study the possibilities of developing safe and permanent dog shelters in Fujairah itself. The shelter could also facilitate a home for stray donkeys.

Abdullah pointed out that the geographical nature of the emirate, where mountains cover more than 70 per cent of its area, is the main reason for the proliferation of stray dogs that live in the slopes and increasingly occupy the city in winter.
