Expelled Samajwadi Party leader Amar Singh was admitted to a hospital here in Dubai on Monday after he fainted at the Dubai International Airport upon his arrival.

The 57-year-old Singh was on a two-day stopover in Dubai, en-route to Singapore for a regular health check-up when he fainted at the Dubai airport, an aide at his Delhi residence said.

He was immediately taken to Dubai’s Mediclinic Welcare Hospital, where he was admitted. Doctors found his condition “critical but stable” upon his admission to the hospital. Doctors at the hospital reportedly suspect low sugar levels as the cause of his fainting. He was kept under observation for a day and was discharged on Tuesday morning.

The politician will be resting in Abu Dhabi for the next couple of days before heading back to New Delhi, Ajit Prasad, his family friend who is accompanying him, said. Prasad said Singh would travel to Singapore for the routine check-up directly from New Delhi at a later date.

Once the public face of Samajwadi Party, Singh was admitted to Singapore’s Mount Elizabeth Hospital and Medical Centre for treatment of kidney ailment a couple of years ago. Since then, he has been visiting the facility for regular check-up.
