Dubai police arrested an Asian man who killed his friend nearly six years after he committed the crime and buried the victim in the sand in Jebel Ali. Police disclosed details of the murder in 2011 when Jebel Ali construction workers stumbled across a decomposed body in a desert area near one of the free zone gates apparently after it was uncovered by sandstorms.

Police said they had not given up and were determined to find the killer although their clue was the ID found with the buried skeleton of the Asian victim.

After intensive investigation, police had a shortlist of suspects, most of whom had been deported from the UAE for staying illegally.
One of the suspects, who for some reason decided to return to Dubai, was arrested on arrival and taken to the police station for questioning.

“The suspect was shocked at the detailed evidence collected by our men. In the end, he collapsed and confessed to murdering his friend,” said Colonel Salim Al Rumaithi, deputy director of Dubai’s CID for detectives.

He said the killer admitted that he had a rift with the victim and went to see him at a deserted place, where he found him having liquor with another friend.

“The defendant said his friend was furious when he saw him and told him to go away.
“He said his friend also pulled a knife and wanted to assault him but that he jumped on him, seized the knife and stabbed him.”

Rumaithi said the defendant then threatened the other friend of implicating him if he tells the police or refuses to help him in burying the body.
Dubai’s police commander Major General Khamis Al Mazina said: “We faced challenges in unraveling this crime but we did not lose hope in catching the killer.”
