A man who was shocked by British police with a Taser stun gun as he waved large knives outside Buckingham Palace was charged on Monday with affray and possessing a bladed weapon in public.

Talhat Rehman, 54, was due to appear at London's Westminster Magistrates' Court later on Monday, London's Metropolitan Police said in a statement.

Rehman, from Harrow in north-west London, was seen ranting and pressing one of the knives to his chest outside the central London palace, just before noon on Sunday.

Police shocked him with a Taser and arrested him in front of crowds of tourists who had come to see the main residence of Queen Elizabeth II.

The monarch and her husband were at her Sandringham estate in eastern England at the time of the incident.

Rehman faces two counts of possessing a bladed weapon in public and one count of affray.
