SRI LANKA: The body of an infant born to a 21-year-old young woman in a hostel at Gangarama Road, Dampe, was found by Piliyandala police, Lankadeepa daily reported.

When police arrived at the scene, the child was dead and the young woman had been admitted to Kalubowila teaching hospital.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the young woman, a resident of Haputale, had come to the hostel about seven months ago and she had been employed together with other young women in the hostel in Suwarapola.

Police said that she had complained to her colleagues that she was ill after returning from the wash room on Monday (15), after which, the others informed the matron and admitted her into a hospital.

After admitting her to the hospital, the other young women had searched around the hostel and found an infant's body lying over a concrete slab near the toilet pit, a police officer said.

Kesbewa Acting Magistrate Sunethra Perera held a magisterial inquiry on the spot.
