A group of armed, masked men yesterday seized three Chinese from their police escorts while they were on their way to a court hearing in Cavite City, about 35 kilometres (22 miles) southwest of Manila.

Police escorts were not able to respond to the unidentified men, who were carrying high-powered arms and grenades, when they took the three accused during their encounter at the city’s Barangay Agudao.

Radio reports said that Chinese Li Tian Hua, Wang Li Na, and Li Lan Yan, who are all undocumented aliens in the Philippines, have pending criminal cases following their arrest in Cavite province earlier in connection with the illegal-drugs trade.

Chief Superintendent Benito Estipona, provincial police director of Region IV-A, said the armed men took the three Chinese at 10am when they had disarmed their police escorts, and they shoved the alleged criminals into a van, with plate number WTT 544.

Police investigators said the van was abandoned in another part of the village several minutes later. They refused to give more details pending further investigation.
