A grandmother and her granddaughter were stabbed to death in the touristic area of Bantayan Island, in the central Philippine province of Cebu.

In what police described as a case of robbery, Patricia Batoy, 74, sustained 15 stab wounds while the nine-year-old Angelica was knifed 10 times, a television report said last night.

The crime happened at 2am on Monday, when suspected robbers barged into the home of the victims on the island’s Barangay Kabangbang.

Police arrested two of the suspects—Romel dela Peña and Ruben Tabion—with the help of the victims’ neighbours.

The victims’ family said the suspects were no strangers to Batoy and Angelica.

The TV report said that police seized from the suspects some valuables, such as pieces of jewellery and cash, belonging to the victims.

Bantayan Island is the main and largest island of the Bantayan Island Group, which includes 16 other smaller islands. The main island is a tourist attraction, owing to its white sand beaches, azure waters, and lush vegetation.
