If you happen to be in Manila on February 14 and feel like going to a concert to celebrate Valentine’s Day, would you patronise four local giants in the music industry or would you rather watch Jessica Sanchez?

Yes, the Filipino-Mexican runner-up in the 11th season of the reality singing show ‘American Idol’ is going to have her first concert in the Philippines on the day—or shall we say night—of hearts.

And she will be serenading her fans in Manila on the same night that Martin Nievera, dubbed the country’s concert king, his estranged wife Pops Fernandez, veteran singer Regine Velasquez, and her husband Ogie Alcasid are having their own concert.

To Mr Nievera, competing against Ms Sanchez for people’s money and attention is a “non-issue”, he tells a local entertainment scribe for the tabloid ‘Tempo’ in a recent interview. “I’ll tell the parents of Jessica’s fans to drop the kids off at the Araneta on their way to the MOA.”

He is giving a hint that Ms Sanchez will attract the younger generation while his team already has a sure following in mature audiences. Dubbed ‘4SOME’, Mr Nievera’s concert with his former wife and another couple will be held at the Mall of Asia, in Metro Manila’s suburb of Pasay City, while Ms Sanchez’s gig is slated at the Araneta Coliseum, in Cubao, along the main thoroughfare of Epifanio delos Santos Avenue.

Mr Nievera says, however, that he is sad that he won’t be able to watch Ms Sanchez perform, as he will also be working that night. He will say some prayers and sing a song for her, however. And “maybe we can share a song one day soon after”, he adds, wishing.

February is one of the busiest concert months in the Philippines, as most Filipinos regard it as the month of hearts, Valentine’s Day being held on the 14th.
