Random shelling by the Yemeni coup rebels and their siege of the area have killed 1,624 people and injured 15,952 others in the Southwestern city of Taiz since March, according to the relief agencies in the besieged town.

The bombing also resulted in the destruction of 3,276 houses while nearly 70 per cent of the city’s population have fled, they said in a report about the effects of more than seven months of hostilities on Taiz.

The report, published by Yemen’s Marib Press news network, showed at least 90 per cent of the business and industrial establishments have shut down, pushing unemployment rates in the city to nearly 95 per cent.

Nearly 95 per cent of medical services in the city have also been disrupted because of the destruction of most hospitals and medical centre.

The report showed at least 600,000 families in Taiz now need urgent food and other relief aid while 1.6 million people are suffering from water shortages.

“The city is facing a disaster…the problem is getting worse every day as the war drags on and the rebels continue to randomly shell residential areas at a time when the city remains under tight siege by the Houthis and their allies,” the report said.
