A Saudi woman suffering from diabetes and weighing nearly 145 kg gave birth to a baby girl weighing more than four kg in an invitro-fertilization operation after a 23-year infertility, a newspaper reported on Wednesday.
Doctors said it was one of the rarest cases in the Gulf Kingdom given the woman ’s illness and overweight and the weakness of her husband’s sperms.
"After obtaining approval from the couple, sperms were extracted from the husband’s testicles and were fertilized in a test tube outside the body…they then were planted inside the wife’s womb,” the Arabic language Sharq newspaper said, quoting Dr Lamya Khalil, a gynaecology consultant at the Test Tube medical centre in the Saudi capital Riyadh.
She said the baby is in a good health and weighed 4.2 kg at birth, adding that the 39-year-old woman is also in good condition after having a Caesarean operation.
