Saudi police arrested 16 expatriates from Bangladesh on charges of gambling, which is strictly banned in the conservative Muslim Gulf Kingdom.

Police, acting on a tip-off, raided an apartment in the western town of Makkah and rounded up the 16 after catching them red-handed.

Sabq Arabic language newspaper said police also seized more than SR16,000 (Dh16,000) in cash used by the men in gambling.

“They will be questioned before standing trial on charges of gambling. They did not show any respect for this holy city by indulging in this crime,” the paper said, quoting Makkah police spokesman Lt Colonel Atti Al Qirshi.
