Renewed random shelling of the besieged Yemeni Taiz province by the Houthis and their allies killed and wounded people on Monday, triggering fresh calls on the UN to probe war crimes by the Iranian-backed coup rebels.

Yemen’s Marib Press, quoting medical sources in the Southwestern province of around 3.7 million people, said seven civilians were killed and 36 injured in the shelling on Monday, adding that it targeted many residential areas.

“Renewed artillery shelling by the Houthis and their allies killed seven civilians and wounded 36 others, including five women. Many residential areas were targeted by the random shelling through Monday,” it said.

The network, meanwhile, quoted a statement by the coordinated relief agencies in Taiz as calling on the UN to form a panel to probe the “war crimes perpetrated by the Houthis” and forces loyal to deposed President Ali Abdullah Saleh.

It said the Houthis and their allies, who have been besieging the province for weeks, are preventing the entry of medicine, food and other relief aid.

“Taiz is suffering from disastrous conditions because of the siege and random shelling.

“The UN is called upon to shoulder its responsibilities and open routes for the transport of medicine and other relief aid to the people,” the statement said.
