90-year-old killer saved from gallows

A Saudi 90-year-old killer was saved from the gallows after she was pardoned by the victim’s relative in response to pleas by the Gulf kingdom’s crown prince, a newspaper reported on Monday.

The woman from the southern province of Asir killed the daughter of her husband’s brother after a heated argument eight years ago. She was jailed and sentenced to death by a criminal court in Asir.

The pardon of the woman was announced this week at a meeting of tribes from the victim’s town of Tareeb and other parts of Asir at the request of crown price Sultan bin Abdul Aziz, Alwatan daily said.

“The tribes accepted Prince Sultan’s mediation and the victim’s relatives agreed to pardon the killer… The prince personally interfered in this case and will pay diya from his own pocket.”

The paper did not say how the woman murdered her relative or whether she has been set free.

Under Islam, a killer could be saved from death punishment and set free in case of a pardon by the victim’s relatives in return for diya (blood money).
