Saudi authorities arrested a Briton who claimed he married a local girl while she was studying in the United Kingdom, press reports said on Wednesday.

The 28-year-old man was assaulted and beaten by the girl’s two brothers in the capital Riyadh before he was handed over to the police, ‘Almuwatin’ news website reported.

It said the Briton told the two brothers that he married their sister but they did not believe him on the grounds he is not permitted to marry a Muslim woman.

“The man was arrested by the police as he insisted he married the Saudi girl and that he has an official document proving this marriage. He told her brothers that their sister is currently in Riyadh but they did not believe him,” it said.
