Saudi authorities have warned the public against buying cars online as they could fall victims to fraud, newspapers in the oil-rich Gulf Kingdom reported on Friday.

“We would like to warn the citizens that buying cars online involves fraud and scam operations,” they said, quoting Mohammed Al Maroul, public relations and information director at the Saudi ministry of interior.

He said many buyers had fallen victims to such scam deals which involve fake car ownership and bank accounts.

He said most of the cases reported to the police had been closed because it is difficult to reach the culprits who operate mostly from abroad.
