Secretary General of the Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf (GCC) has strongly condemned an attack that left a number of innocent civilians dead and injured at a gathering in Saihat City, Qatif Governorate in Saudi Arabia's Eastern Province, as a "terrorist act and a heinous crime against all human and ethical values”.

In a statement, Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani expressed his confidence in the ability of Saudi security service to reveal the circumstances surrounding this "cowardly criminal act" and expose abettors of this crime.

Al Zayani further stressed that all GCC members back any measures being taken by Saudi Arabia to protect the security and safety of citizens and residents.

Saudi Arabia's Interior Ministry said five people were killed in the shooting in the city of Saihat, and nine more were wounded.

Saudi state television reported that a gunman opened fire on people at a prayer hall. State TV reported the attacker was shot dead by security forces.
