Heavy rains dug out many graves and exposed the dead in a cemetery in Saudi Arabia, prompting calls on authorities for action after the spread of stench, a newspaper reported on Saturday.

The graves in the cemetery in the northern town of Arar are still dug nearly a week after heavy rain lashed the Gulf kingdom and triggered massive floods in the western Red Sea port of Jeddah.

“The rain has dug out many graves and exposed the dead….bad smell is pervading the area,” Sharq newspaper said. “Residents want the graveyard guards and authorities to take action and restore these graves to their previous condition in respect of the dead.”
