Man fined for possessing “amulet”

A Saudi court fined a man SR2,000 ($540) for possessing an amulet which he said could have been placed in his baggage by is mother, the Arabic language daily Alriyadh reported on Sunday.

The unnamed man, in his 30s, was stopped by Saudi border customs authorities after a visit to the UAE, where is mother lives, it said.

“They found a paper bearing magic words…they considered it as a talisman which is banned in Saudi Arabia,” it said.

“He told the court he did not know about the paper as it might have been placed by his mother as a protection amulet……..the judge fined the man SR2,000 and released him after having spent nearly a month in prison,” the paper added in its report from the eastern province of Qateef.
