Mother in custody over sons' bodies in freezer

A Polish woman suspected of killing her three newborn sons and hiding their bodies in a freezer was remanded in custody on Thursday, a prosecutor said.

The 42-year-old woman, identified only as Lucyna D., has been charged with three counts of murder, prosecutor Jan Wierzbicki told reporters.

The woman, who also has four other children aged 22, 19, 15 and six, confessed to the killings and faces life in prison if convicted.

But prosecutors in the northern town of Ilawa may still reduce the charge to infanticide, which carries a lighter sentence.

That depends on whether experts find that "the woman acted while in a state of shock after giving birth," Wierzbicki said.

Police discovered the bodies in a freezer on Tuesday. They said they raided the woman's home after concerned neighbours reported not seeing any children following her pregnancy.
