An Omani tried to smuggle an Indonesian woman into the UAE for just Dh700 although she had been deported from the country after she was found to be suffering from a contagious disease, a newspaper reported on Wednesday.

Authorities at Al Hili border point between the UAE and Oman stopped the man as he tried to cross into the eastern oasis town of Al Ain and asked for his and the woman’s ID, the Dubai-based Arabic language daily 'Al Bayan' said.

The unnamed man produced his ID and his wife’s passport claiming that it belongs to the woman accompanying him, it said.

Suspecting the man, authorities checked the passport and asked the see the woman, who they discovered to have been deported from the UAE.

The paper said police arrested the couple after the Omani confessed that he agreed to help the Indonesian woman in return for Dh700.

“The woman told police she wanted to return to the UAE for work. She admitted that she had been deported from the country after she was found to be suffering from a contagious disease,” the paper said without specifying that illness.
