Only juice for kids at Saudi fast food outlets

Saudi authorities have asked their fast food restaurants to stop serving soft drinks and offer only juice to children to offset poor vitamins in their diets.

The consumer protection society said soft drinks served with the less nutritious food at those restaurants pose a health hazard to children as they raise the level of cholesterol in their blood, increase fat, cause osteoporosis in some cases, change child’s behavior and reduce their concentration, “All restaurants are urged to serve juices instead of soft drinks to children to offset the low nutrition levels in the diets served at those outlets,” it said.

It said restaurants which abide by these rules would be shortlisted for the newly created Prince Neyef bin Abdul Aziz award for consumer protection.
