Saudi authorities averted a fresh disaster when a tanker carrying nearly 32,000 litres of gasoline burst into flames while offloading its cargo at a petrol station just near a key air base in the Gulf Kingdom on Saturday, a newspaper reported on Sunday.

Civil defence at the Prince Sultan air base in the central town of Kharj rushed to the station and succeeded in pushing the burning tanker away.

Several civil defence engines battled the fire and prevented it from spreading into the petrol station by using anti-flame substances and water from five tankers.

“They managed to neutralize the station from the burning tanker and brought the tanker fire under control…no one was hurt in the accident,” Sabq daily said.

More than 100 people were killed and wounded when a large tanker laden with gas hit a flyover and burst into flames in Riyadh on Thursday.
