Saudi probes envoy without scarf in UN

Manal Radwan is first secretary at Saudi Arabia’s mission at UN (Sabq)

Saudi Arabia is investigating why one of its senior female envoys at the United Nations appeared without a head cover during a special UN session on the Middle East early this week, a newspaper in the Gulf kingdom reported on Friday.

Manal Radwan, first secretary at Saudi Arabia’s mission at the UN, was shown live on many TV channels without a head cover while delivering a speech.

Saudi newspapers, which published a photograph of the woman, said it was the first time that a Saudi female official publicly appears in the UN without head cover.

“Higher authorities in the kingdom are investigating the issue...they are in touch with the country’s mission at the UN,” ‘Sabq’ newspaper said.

‘Sabq’ and other dailies also said Radwan’s appearance without a scarf triggered a wave of angry reactions from Saudi readers.
