Saudi warns of baby “killer pillows”

Saudi authorities have warned mothers against using what they described as killer pillows for their babies, saying many types of these pillows are flooding the local market, a newspaper reported on Monday.

The Food and Drug Authority said such pillows had been responsible for the death of 12 infants in the Gulf Kingdom over the past 13 years, Bab said.

In a statement, the Authority said some of those pillows are used by mothers to ensure their babies do not turn over during sleep.

“The use of most of these pillows means that the infant’s head is lifted above the body level…...this could lead to the baby’s suffocation,” it said. “Over the past 13 years, such a position has killed 12 infants in the Kingdom.”
