Suitor can see fiancee: Saudi scholar

Parents must not give a suitor a specific time to see their daughter on the grounds this makes her like an 'item for sale'. (Supplied)

A man seeking to engage to a girl is permitted under Islam to see her before the engagement is performed provided the girl should not add make-up, a well-known Saudi scholar was quoted on Thursday as saying.

“There should be arrangements for the suitor to see his would-be fiancé without her knowledge…this will save the girl from despair in case the suitor backs off,” Sheikh Abdul Rahman Al Barrak said, quoted by the Saudi daily Arar.

“But the girl must be shown to her would-be fiancé without make-up…he should see her as she is without any additions or cosmetics.”

Sheikh Barrak cautioned parents that they must not give a suitor a specific time to see their daughter on the grounds this makes her like an “item for sale.”
