A Saudi court acquitted three defendants, including one sentenced to death, in a rape case after it emerged later the three had been set up, a newspaper reported on Wednesday.

The court in the central town of Makkah revoked previous sentences involving the execution of one Arab expatriate and the imprisonment of the two other Arab defendants for one to four years, Almadina Arabic language daily said.

“After spending nearly two years in prison, the court decided to re-try them following new developments in the case,” it said.

“The Asian woman who had claimed they raped her told court she had been asked to do this by an Asian man called Rasheed, who was later arrested…the three defendants were acquitted from the rape case and set free.”
