Motorists who exceed 160 kph on Saudi roads will be arrested under a new law intended to curb reckless driving and traffic accidents.

The decision was enforced on Saturday and it affects roads within cities, where a surge in traffic accidents have killed at least 1,000 people over the past six months.

Ajel newspaper quoted traffic police spokesman Tareq Al Rubayan as saying those who exceed 160 kph would be summoned to the police department to face jail.

“Those who refuse to come will be suspended from their jobs….the new rule affects drivers who have committed traffic offences before…those who do not have any traffic offence will be only fined,” he said.
